Title: " Justice Michael Kirby "
Kirby's lecture was entitled "Human Rights in the New Millennium." The 20th century saw the development of the international movement for human rights. The movement grew out of terrible wars, genocide and the fear of nuclear catastrophe. But what will be the issues of human rights in the coming century, which is bound to be so different? Kirby examines the forces that will shape human rights, including developments in cyberspace and in genetics. He explores some of the current rights issues (sexuality, drug laws and racism) and suggests the ways in which human rights may develop both in domestic courts and in new international tribunals as the forces of globalism ties us more closely together.
