Title: " Black Is...Black Ain't "
This film asks, Is there a real black man or a true black woman? It was completed after Marlon Riggs death from AIDS in 1994, and is his legacy to the African American community. Riggs camera criss-crosses the country as we meet black folk, young and old, rich and poor, rural and urban, gay and straight, grappling with the numerous, often contested, definitions of blackness. This film provides a compelling and constructive critique of sexism, patriarchy, homophobia, colorism and cultural nationalism in the black family, church and other institutions.
